Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program (CPNP)

A baby doesn’t get a second chance to make a first impression!

The Pregnancy Outreach Program is a province-wide program that provides services aimed at helping women and teens at risk of having low birth weight babies. Services, provided in Fort St. John, Dawson Creek and Chetwynd, include:

  • Nutrition and health counselling
  • Food supplements and vitamins
  • Peer support group
  • Referrals to community and professional services.

Who is this Program for?

Pregnant women and teens who want help and information.

What Services are Provided?

  • A program that will help meet your individual needs.
  • Weekly get-together with lunch, topics, information and activities.
  • Relaxed place to ask questions.
  • Free milk, juice and vitamins.
  • Infant supplies.
  • Counselling and referrals.
  • Breast-feeding support.
  • Social activities and crafts.
  • Guest speakers
  • Mother Goose sessions (Fort St. John)
  • After-delivery follow-up and support for six months.
  • We will also help you get other services you need.

What are the Program Goals?

Who Provides the Services?

  • A Program Coordinator
  • A Registered Nurse (R.N.)
  • Pregnancy Outreach Workers
  • A Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist
  • Elders

We Will Help You:

  • Learn about pregnancy
  • Make healthy food choices
  • Cut back on smoking
  • Stop using alcohol and drugs
  • Prepare for the birth of your baby
  • Prepare to breastfeed your baby
  • Learn about your baby
  • Adjust to parenthood and life with a newborn.

What Can You Do To Help?

The success of the program is due in part to support from the communities it serves. Referrals are welcome from agencies, professionals and individuals.

You can help by contributing:

  • Financial donations
  • Layettes for newborns
  • Food (milk, orange juice, eggs and pantry items)
